Pragmatic networking in winter Prague

9. ledna 2017

In mid-December 2016, three of us took an active part in the workshop "FRENCH PRAGMATISM AND THE RENEWAL OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIOLOGY" organized by Paul Blokker and Nicolas Maslowski in cooperation with CEFRES in Prague.

In a talk concerned with the role of aesthetics in the critical moment, Csaba Szaló drew on his previous work with Hungarian minority teachers in Slovakia and discussed the tools they used to create a shared experience of meaning. Approaching these practices as existential projects rather than mere strategies of power, he argued, highlights the importance of an aesthetic reflexivity that orients individuals in a non-argumentative way.

Ivana Rapošová's presentation  addressed the options in which religious conservative agendas can claim justification in a public dispute. Based on an analysis of a television debate preceding the 2015 Slovak referendum on family, she showed how hybrid constructions including different modes (grammars) of claiming common interest serve to negotiate acceptability.

Continuing this line of thought, Adam Gajdoš talked about the different ways cultural trauma can be formed and presented for the public eye by means of a memorial. Discussing three cases from his dissertation research and the fundamentally different logics that made them appear justified, he proposed that different approaches to organizing a memory project also imply different potential for reconciliation.

Though the schedule was tight, the string of presentations afforded for a better overview of the different uses researchers in the Czech lands make of pragmatic sociology, as well as for spurts of engaged discussion with the very much present Laurent Thévenot.
